WestJet Airlines has recognized Penticton as the Best Layover City for its Encore crews.

An award and letter of recognition cites Penticton’s scenery, businesses, friendly staff at Penticton Airport and a welcoming community, making the city “such a joy to visit.”

“It’s wonderful to hear that WestJet Encore crews choose Penticton as their No. 1 layover city. Likewise, we are hugely grateful to WestJet and the other commercial airlines which provide these services to our residents,” says Mayor Julius Bloomfield. “Penticton Airport is a critical asset for people and businesses living throughout the South Okanagan and we will continue to do all we can to support the airlines and encourage future growth.”

The letter of recognition from WestJet reads: “A great layover city is one where our teams feel welcomed, well rested and inspired. Penticton embodies this perfectly. From the moment our crews land at YYF, they are met with stunning views of Okanagan and Skaha Lakes, a vibrant local culture and an abundance of experiences that turn a routine stop into something truly special.”

"Beyond the amenities, what truly sets Penticton apart is the people,” the letter continues. “From the friendly faces at the airport to the local businesses that go above and beyond, you have created an environment where our crews feel valued and at home."

Thom Tischik, executive director of Travel Penticton, emphasized the importance of Penticton Airport for supporting regional tourism.

“YYF provides direct flights to Vancouver and Calgary, and as the major regional airport, it’s often the first introduction for tourists arriving in Penticton. As such, we’re grateful for the commercial airlines and hope to see even more services come available in the future,” he says.

Penticton Airport is owned and operated by Transport Canada, employing more than 200 people and playing a crucial role in response to emergencies and natural disasters within and around South Okanagan.
